About the author

Prof. John Samuel (Sam) Faulkner was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He obtained BS and MS degrees in physics from Auburn University. He was awarded a PhD in physics by The Ohio State University. He has published over 86 journal articles in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics. He wrote a book on the theory of alloys, The Modern Theory of Alloys, J S Faulkner, 1982, published as Vol. 27 of the series Progress in Materials Science, edited J W Christian, P Haasen and T B Massalski (Oxford: Pergamon Press). He edited a book in the same field, Metallic Alloys: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives, 1982, NATO ASI Series, Series E: Applied Sciences, Vol. 256, edited by J S Faulkner and R G Jordan (Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers).

Prof. Faulkner was a research scientist and head of the theory group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is now an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Florida Atlantic University. He is the Associate Director of the Center for Biomedical and Materials Physics (CBAMP).

Prof. Faulkner's PhD adviser at The Ohio State University was the famous Dutch theoretical physicist Jan Korringa, who is best known for conceiving the multiple-scattering method for calculating the electronic structure of condensed matter. This technique was proposed in 1947, but the first realistic calculations using were done by Faulkner and his colleagues in 1967. During the ensuing years he and his collaborators developed the method further and applied it to many studies of metals and alloys. All of this progress has been summarized in the book Multiple Scattering Theory: Electronic structure of solids, J S Faulkner, G M Stocks, and Y Wang, 2019 (Bristol: IOP Publishing). His novel, written under the name "Sam Faulkner" and entitled The Sparrow, is available as an ebook from Kindle Bookstore (Amazon). It is an action-adventure novel, but the plot-line contains many scientifically accurate references from the fields of physics, cryptology and quantum computers. Prof. Faulkner is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is profiled in Who's Who in America. He is married with two children.
