Applied Physics Express moves to fully Open Access from January 2024

From January 2024, all articles published in Applied Physics Express (APEX) will be immediately free to read anywhere in the world. All articles submitted after October 3rd 2023 will be published OA, and APEX's first fully OA issue will be published in January 2024. Moving the journal to fully open access positions APEX as the market-leading fully OA journal in its field, supports submissions from researchers funded by bodies with OA mandates, and future proofs against the continued market shift towards OA. Barrier free access is intended to increase reach and impact of the work.

Change to article length limits for APEX

From February 2019, article length limits will now be defined in terms of the number of words and single-column width figures. This simple system provides a better service to authors as the requirements can be easily understood and followed before submission.

This replaces the previous system which referred to the number of printed pages, which could only be determined after typesetting and led to many authors being asked to shorten their articles after peer-review.

Further details about the new length limits can be found on our Author guidelines page.

New peer review system for APEX

From 19 November 2018, all new submissions to Applied Physics Express (APEX) and regular issues of JJAP will be managed using a new ScholarOne peer review system. This new system has been configured by JSAP and IOP Publishing to provide an efficient service to authors, reviewers and editors.

Submissions made to APEX prior to 19 November 2018 will continue to be managed using the previous peer review system. Links to this system will be found in any correspondence relating to those articles.

Contact details for many users have been transferred from the previous system to ScholarOne, but users will need to reset their passwords when using the site for the first time. A single user account will work across both the APEX and Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP) ScholarOne sites.

New charging system for APEX

For all articles published in APEX from volume 12 (2019) and in JJAP from volume 58 (2019) onwards, IOP Publishing will now manage the invoicing and collecting payments for publication charges and open access APCs, on behalf of JSAP. Following this change, three new currencies are available for international authors (GBP, USD and EUR). Full details can be found on our Publication charges page.

New production team for APEX

For all articles published in APEX from volume 12 (2019) and in JJAP from volume 58 (2019) onwards, IOP Publishing will now manage the production process on behalf of JSAP. All articles will now be assessed and may receive language editing (if required) at no cost. All articles will also be typeset and edited to fit the journals' style. The contact email address for any matters related to the production and publication of APEX articles is apex@iop.org.

A change to publication charges and open access APCs for APEX and JJAP

To simplify the process of publication in APEX, the Editorial Board has chosen to replace the old system of page charges with a per-article publication charge. This change will ensure that authors know exactly what they will be charged upon publication, before they submit their article. The new charges will come into effect for articles published in the 2019 volume onwards. A change to the open access APC will also come into effect at the same time.

Full information about the new charges can be found on our Publication charges page.
