Abstract

Professor Thring (August Bulletin) regards the view that knowledge for its own sake may be superior to useful knowledge as an "archaic snob belief". All useful knowledge and inventions, he seems to assume, must automatically be of "great value to Mankind". In the days when we were working fourteen hours a day in a grim factory in order to return to a barely adequate meal in an insanitary hovel, this may have been so.
