Remote Access Guidelines

During the coronavirus outbreak, you may need to access our journals and ebooks content on IOPscience from a location (e.g. home) away from your institution's campus.

This guide provides information on how to access your institution's licensed content from your current location.

What are my options for accessing remotely?

Your institution may have set you up with login credentials that provide you with a means of accessing content on IOPscience remotely. These methods consist of the following:

Institutional Login (using OpenAthens and Shibboleth): your university may have enabled remote access for you through Institutional Login using OpenAthens or Shibboleth. Look for the Institutional Login link on any article page, where you can find and select your organisation if they support this access method. You will then be able to log in with your Institutional Login credentials and access any content you would normally be able to access on campus. You can also use this direct link to our IOPscience WayFinder to find your institution to see if they support Institutional Login

For more information on Institutional Login please refer to remote access tutorial

VPN or Proxy Server: if your institution provides access to your campus network through a VPN or Proxy Server (i.e. EZProxy) connecting to the VPN or Proxy Server will allow you access to your institution's licensed content remotely.

What if my institution uses these methods but I don't know my login credentials?

We recommend you contact your institution librarian who should be able to assist you accordingly.

How do I know if my university uses Institutional Login (OpenAthens/Shibboleth)?

If your institution does not appear in our IOPscience WayFinder or you receive an error message when attempting to use your Institution's Single Sign-On login page, this indicates that we have not been advised to activate OpenAthens of Shibboleth on behalf of your institution. Please ask your library to contact IOP Publishing Customer Services at customerservices@ioppublishing.org for assistance.

Do you support Google CASA?

CASA (Campus Activated Subscriber Access) is an authentication enhancement that improves the authentication for off-campus users of Google Scholar. If you are connected to your campus network (directly or by VPN/proxy server) and use Google Scholar, Google will remember your institutional affiliation on your device for 120 days so you can continue to access your institution's licensed content outside the network. This 120-day authentication period is refreshed each time you access Google Scholar from within your campus network. .

What if my institution does not provide access to me from my current location?

We recommend you contact your librarian to discuss options for remote access so that they can assist you accordingly. If no options are available, we recommend that your librarian contacts IOP Publishing Customer Services at customerservices@ioppublishing.org.
