Abstract

Competitive swimming is a struggle against the forces that act on athletes as they move through the water. This so-called "resistive drag" opposes the motion of any body that travels though a fluid, such as water and air. As water is about 800–1000 times more dense than air, resistive drag is a much greater limitation in swimming than it is in land-based sports.
