Movie S1. (3.6 MB MOV) Movie sequence of surface oil. GIS mapped oil distributions were animated in sequence (ESRI ArcMap v9.3 GIS software). Three identified northward oil pulses are indicated using Roman numerals, I–III. The first two pulses, before the 15 July well head shut-in, are clearly defined. The third pulse, after the shut-in date, is clearly defined in its initial push northward, but the end is less clear owing to the rapid disappearance of surface oil in mid-August. We can estimate the termination (dashed line in figure 1(b) of the main article for phase III) from a surface drifter deployed in June that was entrained in residual surface oil.
