Machine Learning 2020 is now open to submissions

After the big success of the 2019 special issue published on 20 December, 2019, the Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment (JSTAT) has decided to publish a yearly special issue in the field of Machine learning - Artificial Intelligence.

This is a field with a rapidly growing activity, and in recent years quite a few physicists got involved into it. JSTAT wants to contribute to the development of this field on the side of statistical physics by publishing yearly special issues, which will reflect the strong activity at the interface between statistical physics and machine learning. In fact, given the different editorial policies between the Machine Learning, Computer Science and Theoretical Physics communities (proceedings vs regular articles) we believe it is important to offer to the community of researchers, and in particular to young researchers, the opportunity of having their work properly recognized and at the same time stimulate the cross-disciplinary interactions.

The editorial committee in charge of these special issues is formed by the JSTAT Editors Riccardo Zecchina (chair), Yoshiyuki Kabashima, Bert Kappen, Florent Krzakala and Manfred Opper.

The special issues on machine learning include two types of papers:

  • Invited papers, selected by the editorial committee, published recently in the proceedings of some major conference. The authors of the selected papers have been proposed to include, if needed, an augmented version of their conference paper, including supplementary material which makes it more adapted for the readership of our journal.
  • Papers in the field of Machine Learning with some connection to statistical physics. These papers will be reviewed through the standard process of JSTAT, supervised by the editorial committee. Articles already accepted in some dedicated conferences are accepted, provided this is clearly stated, and the copyright allows this republication.

If you decide to submit your contribution to the Special Issue, please follow the instructions below:

  • Connect to http://jstat.sissa.it, register (if needed) and login;
  • In the "Submit" section of the JSTAT home page click on "Submit a paper for a special issue";
  • Select "Machine Learning 2020" from the list;
  • Follow the step-by-step procedure for submission. In case of need, please click on the "HELP" link available at the top of the submission pages.
Kindly make sure you submit your "Machine Learning 2020" contribution by 15 October 2020

Understand the impact of your research

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with Altmetric to provide a deeper understanding of how published research is being used. Altmetric gathers data from any online forum where published research is being discussed and displays it in an easy-to-read format on the article page on IOPscience.

Look for the Altmetric badge on any article to discover how the research is being used and shared around the world. Find out more about Altmetric and how the Altmetric Attention Score is calculated.

New sections

Since the start of January 2016, the content of JSTAT has being organised within five sections to match the evolving breadth of scope of the journal. Sections are chosen according to the main themes of the articles published. Each section is associated with one or more of the Scientific Directors of the journal. The new sections are as follows:

  • Quantum statistical physics, condensed matter, integrable systems
    Scientific Directors: Eduardo Fradkin and Giuseppe Mussardo
  • Classical statistical mechanics, equilibrium and non-equilibrium
    Scientific Directors: David Mukamel, Matteo Marsili and Giuseppe Mussardo
  • Disordered systems, classical and quantum
    Scientific Directors: Eduardo Fradkin and Riccardo Zecchina
  • Interdisciplinary statistical mechanics
    Scientific Directors: Matteo Marsili and Riccardo Zecchina
  • Biological modelling and information
    Scientific Directors: Matteo Marsili, William Bialek and Riccardo Zecchina

Reprints

IOP Publishing has introduced a new reprint ordering service accessed via IOPscience, enabling authors and other content users to easily purchase high-quality printed copies of published articles. The new simple to use service is available for Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment and allows customers to order 25 or more copies of any article with a PDF. All reprints are provided with a cover and in full colour (where colour images were supplied in the article). The reprints service is accessed directly from the article abstract in IOPscience via the "Buy this article in print" link within the Article Information section. For orders in excess of 250 copies, please contact pod@ioppublishing.org.

JSTAT Highlights

We are pleased to announce a new selection collecting together some of the most noteworthy recent articles published in the field of statistical physics. JSTAT Highlights have been personally selected by the Scientific Directors and will be free to read for a period of six months.

Special Issues and Perspective Reviews

Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment publishes Special Issues, i.e. collections of selected articles from high quality workshops and conferences and invited articles on topical issues and Perspective Reviews, relatively short review-type papers.
