IOP Publishing and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), jointly award an annual prize for the best paper published in the journal during the previous year.

The prize is named in honour of the first editor of PMB, John Roberts, who served from 1956 to 1960.

The Rotblat Medal to the authors of the research paper that has received the most citations in the preceding five years (according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)).
