The world does not need to make any more styrofoam or golf balls. The store shelves have enough of both to fill the needs of our generation, and for all practical purposes, neither wear out.

Recent consideration of pollution control and fuel efficiency for a variety of combustion processes, and increasing concern over safety in industrial activities involving flammable and poisonous gases, have necessitated the development of sensors for reliable detection of these gases.

Chemical microsensors have growing roles in applications with significant global impact, including environmental cleanup and monitoring, industrial process control, automotive and industrial emissions monitoring, aeronautical and space systems, planetary exploration, screening for explosives, worker safety, and health care.
