In their interesting article on "Why Nature is complex" (December 1993, p39), Bak and Paczuski are using computer simulations to obtain numerical solutions for a variety of phenomena which may be classed as "cascade processes". It is worth mentioning that analytical solutions for many cascade processes exist in the literature, and these solutions are readily adaptable to the examples shown in the article.
