Abstract
NASA has decided it will, after all, extend the life of the ageing Hubble telescope. The agency had cancelled all future Space Shuttle missions to Hubble on safety grounds after the loss of Columbia in 2003. But following outrage from astronomers, a change in leadership at NASA and the success of recent Shuttle missions, astronauts will now be sent to repair Hubble and equip it with two more instruments. This work should keep the telescope operational until about 2013 and increase its observational power by up to a factor of 100.
