Abstract
Suppose, for the sake of argument, that it would indeed be a good thing to reduce the rate at which we emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The political problem is to do so without destroying the economic structure of the world as we know it. I am not pretending that the status quo is idyllic or anywhere near optimal, but in an uncertain universe, evolution is safer than revolution. As a wise man once said, "if you begin from where you are, you won't get lost before you start".
