Abstract

Achieving nutrition security through diet quality is a major challenge globally, as reflected in the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. To aid in this, there is a global consensus that diet quality is a result of overall dietary patterns rather than individual nutrients. This puts the emphasis on food quality and availability and is causing a major re-think in the science of nutrition. Recently, the Australian Academy of Science produced a Decadal Plan for the Science of Nutrition (https://www.science.org.au/supporting-science/science-policy-and-analysis/decadal-plans-science/nourishing-australia-decadal-plan) that identified three areas of focus: Social Determinants, Nutrition Mechanisms and Precision Nutrition as well as the Enabling Platforms that should result in greater opportunities to achieve nutrition security. This presentation will discuss these three areas and platforms in the context of targets for agriculture and food processing.
