Abstract
The topic known as spontaneous symmetry breaking is afflicted with a high level of confusion. Here the topic is discussed in some detail focusing on the various sources of the confusion. A picture is presented, in which, with a small exception, and in contrast with standard presentations, the vacuum state is symmetric, and yet, the successful phenomenology usually associated with the subject is fully recovered.
