Abstract
Diffuse magnetic scattering of neutrons is observed around the magnetic Bragg peaks and at the (100) position in face-centred cubic MnPd alloys. Results for the alloy containing 15 at.% Pd, which has a Néel temperature of 347 °K, are presented in detail. The diffuse scattering is discussed in terms of static short-range magnetic order, small particle size line broadening, and inelastic magnetic scattering. It is shown that the inelastic scattering model is consistent with the scattering observed. From the magnitude of the scattering an estimate is made of the `exchange energy'.
