Abstract

The theory of the self-magnetic field in high current discharges, originally developed by Tonks, has been investigated omitting a special assumption used in the work of Tonks. The influence of the parameters describing the discharge conditions has been considered in some detail. A comparison is also made with a simple, though more approximate, version of the theory due to Thonemann and Cowhig. The two theories are shown to be in good agreement.
