Abstract

An analysis of the stability of ideal internal kink modes in high temperature tokamaks is presented. The theory includes kinetic effects associated with energetic trapped particles, bulk ion diamagnetic drifts as well as transit resonances. A corresponding dispersion relation is derived and analysed both analytically and numerically. The roles and implications of various kinetic effects are delineated and comparisons with previously obtained results made.
