In this research, the implementation of simultaneous trilateration to measure three-dimensional, dynamic computer-numerically controlled (CNC) contours using the laser ball bar was investigated. The motivation behind this work is the desire to perform rapid, pre-process verification of CNC part paths without machining a test part. This reduces scrap and increases process efficiency. A prototype simultaneous trilateration laser ball bar (STLBB) system was designed, constructed and tested. Verification testing of the STLBB system was also completed. This investigation was composed of two parts: (i) comparisons between dynamic, two-dimensional paths measured both with the STLBB system and with an optical grid encoder; and (ii) static and dynamic reproducibility evaluation. Good agreement between the STLBB system and independent measurement devices provided authentication of the STLBB measurement capabilities. Once the validity and reproducibility of the STLBB system as a dynamic measurement tool had been confirmed, several three-dimensional CNC contour measurements were performed at micrometre-level accuracy.

Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been used to monitor the axial and radial strain induced in a 30 mm calibre gun barrel by the passage of a projectile with a muzzle velocity of >1 km . The performance of the sensors is compared with that of conventional resistive foil strain gauges. The FBG sensors were used to monitor transient strain signatures of duration s and magnitude up to 10 000 m .

A particle moving across the interference pattern of two intersecting laser beams scatters the incident light with a temporal variation that enables the calculation of particle velocity. This idea was realized in laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). By recording the light scattering pattern with a fast line scan sensor, the spatial modulation of the signal is also detected. This yields, in addition to particle velocity, information about the size and morphology of the particle.

This is the working principle of a new measuring device presented in this paper, the differential laser Doppler anemometer (DLDA). The theoretical background, principle of data evaluation and first experimental results of water and emulsion droplets and of glass beads are described.

This report examines the measurement of rotational accuracy for machine tools, using the concept of cylindrical error on linear motion. This measurement can be divided into three steps: first, separate the straight-line motion error of the slide track from motional parts of the machine tools; next, choose the basic cross section of cylinder and estimate the errors of cross sections through the three-point error separating method; third, estimate the roundness error of each cross section projected onto the perpendicular basal plane according to the measurement of straight-line error; finally, calculate the value of the radius of the minimum circumscribing cylinder in order to evaluate the rotational accuracy of multi-point cutting machine tools.

The development of thermal detectors has progressed rapidly over the last decade as a result of improved thin film processes and new thermoelectric materials. A planar radiometer consists of a thin planar thermopile, shaped as a meandering path, deposited on an appropriate dielectric substrate. The cold thermojunctions are shielded with a reflective coating while the sensing hot junctions are blackened. This paper outlines the main criteria in the design of enhanced devices. The underlying physical principles and specific properties are discussed by way of a simple model with a view to explaining and improving both sensitivity to radiation and immunity to convection losses. Hypotheses regarding the distributed layout of planar radiometers are reviewed and several low cost devices are described together with prospective enhanced realizations. Besides being rugged, such sensors can deal with a wider range of irradiance, with values around 0.7 MW (typical dynamic range 85 dB), than classical hollowed devices based on thin membranes. Since planar structures can be made by deposit various dielectric materials, many applications in military and space research can be expected in the coming years.

Raman scattering in an optical fibre has been utilized as the near-infrared source for a pulsed photoacoustic spectroscopic study of liquid hydrocarbons. An open-cell system is described and the performance criteria for practical photoacoustic instrumentation are discussed. Results show that a typical signal-to-noise ratio of 50 may be achieved, which makes this system suitable for the detection of small concentrations of hydrocarbons in liquids. The photoacoustic system has been used to measure concentrations both of dissolved and of dispersed hydrocarbons and the results of this study indicate the practical potential for novel open-cell photoacoustic instrumentation for the detection of crude oil in water using near-infrared wavelengths in a spectral region for which suitable diode lasers are available.

A conductivity probe having one electrode with a small surface (the sensing electrode) can be used for the measurement of the instantaneous local concentration during liquid mixing in an electrolytic solution. The presence of solid particles in the mixing field causes fluctuations of the electrolyte concentration signal, contaminating in this way the concentration measurement. The influences of the volume fraction and size of the solid particles on the electrolyte-concentration signal are investigated. The data indicate how to estimate the effect of the presence of particles in the specification of the electrolyte concentration. Furthermore, a method which allows the measurement of the mean electrolyte concentration at high solids volume fractions in electrolytic liquid/solid suspensions is proposed.

Efforts to refine a current cutting tool system for active error compensation with the aid of ultrasonic vibration cutting technique are described. Two piezoelectric actuators are integrated in the cutting tool, one of which is for active error compensation and the other for ultrasonic vibration cutting. The principles of active compensation for cutting error and ultrasonic vibration cutting are first explained. The experimentally studied characteristics of the piezoelectric actuators and the development of the integrated cutting tool are described. Experimental cutting results have shown that the cutting tool developed is satisfactory in terms of improved roundness and surface roughness of machined workpieces.

Long-range distributed strain and temperature measurements with Brillouin optical-fibre time-domain analysis (BOTDA) suffer from systematic errors that are due to the measurement principle itself. The significance of these errors is analysed theoretically and proved by experiments. A compensation method based on the measurement both of the pulsed and of the CW lightwave eliminates these errors and significantly improves the BOTDA method. Measurement deviations of more than 20% from a given temperature difference were reduced to less than 3%.

A gravimetric experimental device allowing the measurement of pure gas adsorption isotherms is presented. The mass measurement is performed by a Rubotherm magnetic suspension balance instrumented in such a way to allow completely automated adsorption isotherm measurements for pressures ranging from 0 to 10 000 kPa and for temperatures from 303 to 423 K. Its main originality is that, although it works at high temperature, all the components in contact with the adsorbate are at the experimental temperature so that it is possible to study adsorbates which condensate at high-pressure and ambient temperature. This paper provides a detailed experimental procedure, the measurement accuracy and some comments on the advantages and drawbacks of the method. As examples of experimental results, adsorption isotherms of nitrogen and butane on activated carbon (F30-470, Chemviron Carbon) at five temperatures (303, 323, 343, 363 and 383 K) are presented. As a first step of a general study devoted to the comparison of high-pressure adsorption measurement techniques, the 303 K nitrogen adsorption isotherm is compared to data obtained for the same system but with a volumetric apparatus working in narrower ranges of temperature and pressure.

We have developed a new approach to selectively detecting copper(I) ions in aqueous solutions with a detection limit down to 0.1 ppb. The concentration of Cu(I) ions is determined from the change in fluorescence decay of perylene caused by energy transfer to the complex of Cu(I) ions with a chelating agent, 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline. Complex formation and energy transfer in two different sensor matrixes, porous Nafion 117 film and Amberlite resin, are discussed.

A fringe position method has been developed for measuring the positions of a tracking mirror. This method uses multi-fringes with known interbeam angle to compensate for variations in angle and position of a tracking mirror, allowing the determination of tracking mirror positions with high resolution over a large measurement range. The position vectors of the tracking mirror are expressed using a point-slope scheme.

A novel sensing technique for the in situ monitoring of the rate of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of metal thin films has been developed. This optical fibre based sensor works on the principle of the evanescent wave penetration of waveguide modes into the uncladded portion of a multimode fibre. The utility of this optical fibre sensor is demonstrated in the case of PLD of silver thin films obtained by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser which is used to irradiate a silver target at the required conditions for the preparation of thin films. This paper describes the performance and characteristics of the sensor and shows how the device can be used as an effective tool for the monitoring of the deposition rate of silver thin films. The fibre optic sensor is very simple, inexpensive and highly sensitive compared with existing techniques for thin film deposition rate measurements.

The objective of this paper is to provide a brief overview of various inspection methodologies for continuously extruded products, such as wire, cable and optical fibres, and to describe the implementation of a practical surface inspection technique. The main feature of the developed system is the use of a conic reflector arrangement to collect light scattered from a cylindrical surface. Illumination is supplied by optical fibres, strategically positioned around the cone, to provide full circumferential lighting. The inspection arrangement was implemented and tested in an industrial environment and effectively detected defects, such as blisters on wire (of diameters 0.2 mm to 3 mm), at a speed of up to .
