We demonstrate an x-ray imaging method that combines Fourier transform holography with tomography (‘tomoholography’) for three-dimensional (3D) microscopic imaging. A 3D image of a diatom shell with a spatial resolution of 140 nm is presented. The experiment is realized by using a small gold sphere as the reference wave source for holographic imaging. This setup allows us to rotate the sample and to collect a number of 2D projections for tomography.

We study different types of stationary dynamos observed in the Von Kármán sodium (VKS) experiment when varying the electromagnetic boundary conditions on (and in) the impellers. The flow is driven with two impellers made of soft iron (Monchaux et al 2007 Phys Rev. Lett. 98 044502) or using one soft-iron impeller and one stainless steel impeller. The magnetic field is mapped using 40 three-dimensional probes distributed within the flow and its surroundings. Symmetry and coupling properties are then retrieved from direct probe measurements and/or from the field structure as reconstructed using the inversion procedure described by Boisson and Dubrulle (2011 New J. Phys. 13 023037). We study transitions between phases of matter with topological order. By studying these transitions in exactly solvable lattice models we show how universality classes may be identified and critical properties described. As a familiar example to elucidate our results concretely, we describe in detail a transition between a fully gapped achiral 2D p-wave superconductor ( p + i p for pseudo-spin up/ p − i p for pseudo-spin down) to an s-wave superconductor. We show in particular that this transition is of the 2D transverse field Ising universality class.

Recently, antihydrogen atoms were trapped at CERN in a magnetic minimum (minimum-B) trap formed by superconducting octupole and mirror magnet coils. The trapped antiatoms were detected by rapidly turning off these magnets, thereby eliminating the magnetic minimum and releasing any antiatoms contained in the trap. Once released, these antiatoms quickly hit the trap wall, whereupon the positrons and antiprotons in the antiatoms annihilate. The antiproton annihilations produce easily detected signals; we used these signals to prove that we trapped antihydrogen. However, our technique could be confounded by mirror-trapped antiprotons, which would produce seemingly identical annihilation signals upon hitting the trap wall. In this paper, we report on the performance of the SwissQuantum quantum key distribution (QKD) network. The network was installed in the Geneva metropolitan area and ran for more than one-and-a-half years, from the end of March 2009 to the beginning of January 2011. The main goal of this experiment was to test the reliability of the quantum layer over a long period of time in a production environment. A key management layer has been developed to manage the key between the three nodes of the network. This QKD-secure network was utilized by end-users through an application layer.

The accurate control of the relative phase of multiple distinct sources of radiation produced by high harmonic generation is of central importance in the continued development of coherent extreme UV (XUV) and attosecond sources. Here, we present a novel approach which allows extremely accurate phase control between multiple sources of high harmonic radiation generated within the Rayleigh range of a single-femtosecond laser pulse using a dual-gas, multi-jet array. Fully ionized hydrogen acts as a purely passive medium and allows highly accurate control of the relative phase between each harmonic source. Consequently, this method allows quantum path selection and rapid signal growth via the full coherent superposition of multiple HHG sources (the so-called quasi-phase-matching). Numerical simulations elucidate the complex interplay between the distinct quantum paths observed in our proof-of-principle experiments.

Clinical diagnosis of skin cancers is based on several morphological criteria, among which is the presence of microstructures (e.g. dots and nests) sparsely distributed within the tumour lesion. In this study, we demonstrate that these patterns might originate from a phase separation process. In the absence of cellular proliferation, in fact, a binary mixture model, which is used to represent the mechanical behaviour of skin cancers, contains a cell–cell adhesion parameter that leads to a governing equation of the Cahn–Hilliard type. Taking into account a reaction–diffusion coupling between nutrient consumption and cellular proliferation, we show, with both analytical and numerical investigations, that two-phase models may undergo a spinodal decomposition even when considering mass exchanges between the phases. We study the dynamics of single-photon absorption by a single emitter coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide that simultaneously provides channels for spontaneous emission (SE) decay and a channel for the input photon. We have developed a time-dependent theory that allows us to specify any input single-photon wavepacket guided by the waveguide as the initial condition, and calculate the excitation probability of the emitter, as well as the time evolution of the transmitted and reflected fields. For single-photon wavepackets with a Gaussian spectrum and temporal shape, we obtain analytical solutions for the dynamics of absorption, with maximum atomic excitation . We present a new Kondo-lattice system, YbNi ₄P ₂, which is a clean heavy-fermion metal with a severely reduced ferromagnetic (FM) ordering temperature at T _C = 0.17 K, evidenced by distinct anomalies in susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity measurements. The FM nature of the transition, with only a small ordered moment of ∼0.05 μ _B, is established by a diverging susceptibility at T _C with huge absolute values in the ferromagnetically ordered state, severely reduced by small magnetic fields. Furthermore, YbNi ₄P ₂ is a stoichiometric system with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal and electronic structure and strong correlation effects which dominate the low-temperature properties. This is reflected by a stronger-than-logarithmically diverging Sommerfeld coefficient and a linear-in- T resistivity above T _C, which cannot be explained by current theoretical prediction...

We describe the ground state of a large, dilute, neutral atom Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) doped with N strongly coupled mutually indistinguishable, bosonic neutral atoms (referred to as ‘impurity’) in the polaron regime where the BEC density response to the impurity atoms remains significantly smaller than the average density of the surrounding BEC. We find that N impurity atoms with N ≠ 1 can self-localize at a lower value of the impurity–boson interaction strength than a single impurity atom. When the ‘bare’ short-range impurity–impurity repulsion does not play a significant role, the self-localization of multiple bosonic impurity atoms into the same single particle orbital (which we call co-self-localization) is the nucleation process of the phase separation transition. When the short-range impurity–impurity repulsion successfully competes with co-self-localization, the system may form a stable liquid of self-localized single impurity polarons.
