We consider a one-dimensional modulated structure, where the bulk and surface periodicities may be different. In the vicinity of an incommensurate-commensurate transition, of the Lifshitz or sine-Gordon type, we show that the surface influence may be felt well into the bulk. This should be of relevance to some diffraction experiments.
