Abstract

Some activation cross sections have been measured for the elements Na, Al, Sc, Cr, Cu, Ag and Bi using 14.8 MeV neutrons from the (DT) reaction. The cross section values with their experimental errors are as follows:

23Na(n, p)23Ne 29 mbn ± 10%, 23Na(n, α)20F 222 mbn ± 10%, 27Al(n, p)27Mg 77 mbn ± 10%, 45Sc(n, 2n)44mSc 149 mbn ± 15%, 45Sc(n, 2n)44Sc 179 mbn ± 15%, 45Sc(n, α)42K 63 mbn ± 15%, 50Cr(n, 2n)49Cr 32 mbn ± 10%, 52Cr(n, p)52V 105 mbn ± 10%, 65Cu(n, p)65Ni 29 mbn ± 10%, 107Ag(n, 2n)106Ag (8.2 days) ~6500 mbn, 107Ag(n, 2n)106Ag (24 min) 662 mbn ± 10%, 109Ag(n, 2n)108Ag 833 mbn ± 10%, 109Ag(n, p)109Pd 2.7 mbn ± 20%, 109Ag(n, α)106Rh 12 mbn ± 25%, 209Bi(n, p)209Pb 0.7 mbn ± 15%, 209Bi(n, α)206T1 0.6 mbn ± 15%. The cross sections were measured in relation to 556 mbn for the cross section of 63Cu(n, 2n)62Cu and 117 mbn for the cross section of 27Al(n, α)24Na reactions. It has been found that the (n, α) cross section values follow more or less the empirical curve given by Blosser, Goodman and Handley in 1958.
