Abstract

We report here a surprising result that emerges from our experiments on the acoustics of stringed instruments; namely, that it is not possible to produce sound from a string when it is bowed at its midpoint. This is not of great interest to musicians, who bow well away from the string centre, but the physics of the effect is worth considering if only because naively one would expect string excitation to be easiest at the midpoint.
