Abstract

The author considers the motion of a charged particle in a static electromagnetic field from the point of view of the principles of energy and momentum, where the energy and momentum contain contributions from the electromagnetic field of the particle itself. If the ill defined self-field contributions to the field energy and momentum are dropped these principles lead to the standard equations of motion and conserved energy.
