Abstract

A new booklet produced jointly by the Associated Examining Board and Barclays Bank provides useful advice on revision and examinations for all students. The authors, David Elsom and George Turnbull, stress the importance of the first ten minutes of uninterrupted study, followed by a break, as part of a planned programme of revision. Short, concentrated periods of 20 - 30 minutes' duration are much more effective than mammoth four-hour sessions when revising, and time management is crucial, along with examination technique, revision methods and ways to remember the things that even a 'swot' might forget.

The authors also have important advice for parents: they can offer tender loving care, tea and sympathy, but they should not nag. In fact they should be seen and not heard!

Copies of the booklet, How to do Better in Exams, are available free from Department XDC, Barclays Bank plc, Marefair, Northampton NN1 1SG (tel: freephone 0800 400100).
