Abstract

Atomic spectroscopy is an experimental technique that can be applied to a large number of problems beyond the obvious one of elucidating atomic structure. After the rapid advances of the 1920s and 1930s, when the groundwork for the development of quantum theory was established, there came a quiescent period, followed more recently by a further rapid expansion.
