Scope and key information

Translational Materials Research is a new type of learned publication focusing on the steps needed to translate breakthroughs in advanced materials research into commercial technologies, products and applications. The journal covers all stages of the materials innovation chain—from discovery and invention through to product development and manufacturing.

TMR seeks to make connections between the main stakeholders in the translational process: researchers in academic and government labs; scientists and engineers in industrial R&D; funding agencies and policy-makers; as well as venture capitalists, other investors and intellectual-property experts. The journal takes a cross-disciplinary view across all areas of materials research, including physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science and engineering.

Article acceptance criteria
To be published in Translational Materials Research, an article should describe new developments and initiatives that make a significant contribution to the translation of materials discoveries into ready-for-market applications. Articles will be published in two sections:

Invention, discovery and innovation – focusing on materials discoveries and technologies with clear commercial potential. Authors must demonstrate that they have addressed practical issues for real-world applications, with specific themes including:

  • Materials and devices for next-generation technologies
  • Scalability, reliability, lifetime issues
  • Product development issues: integration, packaging, testing
  • Novel fabrication technologies

Policy, funding and business strategy – focusing on the translation issues associated with turning promising inventions into commercial success. Authors will need to provide a balanced and rigorous analysis to highlight best practice and enable effective knowledge sharing. Specific themes include:

  • Case studies and best practice
  • Innovation policy
  • Funding and investment
  • Intellectual property
  • Facilities and resources supporting translation
