  SiC/graphite composites with exelent machinable properties and thermal shock behaviour were successfully fabricated by pressureless sintering at 1700°C in nitrogen atmosphere. A dipping infiltration process was applied to improve the strength and oxidation resistance of the composites. Dense SiC coating was covered on the composites' surface by heat-treating at 1400°C in nitrogen atmosphere with dipping infiltration of silica sol and phenolic resin solutions. The flexural strength of the SiC coated composites were improved from 60 MPa to 140 MPa obviously, and the weight loss of the SiC coated composites was reduced more than 20 % comparing with the uncoated composites by oxidation resistance testing at 1000 °C for 24 h in air. SEM micrographs shows that SiC coating was surrounded the surface of pores and XRD pattern revealed that the new layer was SiC.

  Severe structural damage suffered by several modern buildings during recent earthquakes illustrates the importance of avoiding sudden changes in lateral stiffness and strength. Recent earthquakes that occurred have shown that a large number of existing reinforced concrete buildings are vulnerable to damage or even collapse during a strong earthquake. While damage and collapse due to soft story are most often observed in buildings, they can also be developed in other types of structures. The lower level containing the concrete columns behaved as a soft story in that the columns were unable to provide adequate shear resistance during the earthquake. Usually the most economical way of retrofitting such as a building is by adding proper bracing to soft stories. So, in this paper occurring of soft at the lower level of high rise buildings subjected to earthquake has been studied. Also has been tired to investigate on adding of bracing in various arrangements to structure in order to reduce soft story effect on seismic response of building. It is lead to assess the vulnerability level of existing multi-storied buildings so that they can be retrofitted to possess the minimum requirements. This will help in minimizing the impending damages and catastrophes.

  Composites materials are intended to be used more extensively as an alternative of aluminum structure in aircraft and aerospace applications. This is due to their attractive properties as high strength-to-weight ratio and stiffness-to-weight ratio. Besides that it clarifies the growing interest for composites materials due to advantages of lightweight, high strength, high stiffness, superior fatigue life, tremendous corrosion resistance and low cost manufacturing. In this study, a finite element analysis (FEA) of fiberglass unidirectional E-type was analyzed in the framework of ABAQUS finite element commercial software. The analysis was done to quantify the mechanical properties and response of unidirectional E-glass in term of tensile, compression and thermal responses. From the analysis, the maximum and minimum values of stress and strain for E-glass 21xK43 Gevetex and Silenka E-glass 1200tex were obtained and stress-strain curve is presented. The ultimate load of failure, elastic behavior, tensile strength and other properties for each laminated plates under tensile and thermal-stress are determined from stress-strain curves. The simulation will run twice for each material where the first simulation based on orientation angles of 45° for ply-1, -45° for ply-2 and 90° for ply-3 while the second simulation, the orientation angles is 0° for all plies. The simulation is successfully conducted and verified by experimental data.

  Bainitic steel 7CrMoVTiB10-10 is one the newest steels for waterwalls of modern industrial boilers [1]. In Europe, attempts have been made to make butt welded joints of pipes made of this steel of the diameter up to 51 mm and thickness up to 8 mm. Many cracks have been observed in the welded joint, both during welding and transport and storage [2-4]. The reasons of cracking and the prevention methods have not been investigated. No comprehensive research is carried out in Europe in order to automate the welding process of the industrial boiler elements made of modern bainitic steel, such as 7CrMoVTiB10-10. There is no information about its overall, operative and local weldability, influence of heat treatment, as well as about resistance of the joints to cracking during welding and use. The paper presents experience of Energoinstal SA from development of technology and production of waterwalls of boilers made of the 7CrMoVTiB 10-10 steel on a multi-head automatic welder for submerged arc welding.

  Kenaf fibre has high potential to be used for composite reinforcement in biocomposite material. It is made up of an inner woody core and an outer fibrous bark surrounding the core. The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of short kenaf bast and core fibre reinforced unsaturated polyester composites with varying fibre weight fraction i.e. 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%. The compression moulding technique was used to prepare the composite specimens for tensile, flexural and impact tests in accordance to the ASTM D5083, ASTM D790 and ASTM D256 respectively. The overall results showed that the composites reinforced with kenaf bast fibre had higher mechanical properties than kenaf core fibre composites. The results also showed that the optimum fibre content for achieving highest tensile strength for both bast and core fibre composites was 20%wt. It was also observed that the elongation at break for both composites decreased as the fibre content increased. For the flexural strength, the optimum fibre content for both composites was 10%wt while for impact strength, it was at 10%wt and 5%wt for bast and core fibre composites respectively.

  The surface of palm kernel was modified by acrylic acid (AA). Low density polyethylene (LDPE) was filled by palm kernel shell at various 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 php. The effect of AA as a coupling agent on LDPE/PKS biocomposites on tensile properties and morphology was investigated. The results show that the increasing of filler content decreased the tensile strength and break elongation but increased the Young's modulus. The presence of AA indicates higher tensile strength and Young's modulus but lower elongation at break compared to untreated LDPE/PKS biocomposites. The scanning electron microscope study show that the better interfacial interaction between palm kernel shell and low density polyethylene with addition of AA.

  The analysis of observed structure factors estimated after Rietveld analysis by the maximum-entropy method (MEM) gives electron or nuclear densities in the unit cell. The resultant densities are, more or less, biased toward a structural model in the Rietveld analysis. To overcome such a problem, we devised a sophisticated technique named MEM-based pattern fitting (MPF). For this purpose, a pattern-fitting system, RIETAN-FP, and a MEM analysis programs, PRIMA or its successor called Dysnomia, were virtually integrated into a structure-refinement system, whereby the pattern calculated from structure factors obtained by MEM is fit to the whole observed pattern. The resulting observed structure factors are analyzed again by MEM. In this way, whole-pattern fitting and MEM analysis are alternately repeated until R factors in the former no longer decrease. MPF virtually represents the crystal structure by electron or nuclear densities. MPF is, therefore, very effective in visualizing positional, occupational, and orientational disorder, chemical bonding, and anharmonic thermal motion. New programs, MPF_multi and VESTA 3, used in MPF are briefly introduced, and two representative applications of MPF to inorganic materials containing highly disordered chemical species are demonstrated.

  The aim of this study is to determine which compounds are present into drinking water packaged in poly(ethylene terephtalate) bottles and to know the origin of these substances in relationship with the material.

  A screening procedure was established for the detection of unknown compounds into bottled water. A panel of water bottles has been tested after exposure to extreme conditions of temperature and UV radiation to accelerate the possible migration of substances.

  At the same time, physico-chemical characterization of polymeric material has been performed namely calorimetric analysis, IRTF and low-frequency mechanical spectroscopy. The results thus obtained allow understanding in a better way the migration kinetics of molecules inside the polymer, it means the pollution of the bottled water.

  Waste disposal dumps are one of sources of carbonic gas penetration in the atmosphere. The waste is treated into RDF (refuse-derived fuel) and used in boilers for electric power or heat generation for decrease in carbonic gas emissions in the atmosphere. In industry power stations on the basis of the combined cycle have the highest efficiency of burning. The paper deals with the application of an air-plasma gasifier using the down draft scheme of RDF transformation into synthesis gas, which afterwards can be used in the combined cycle. Results of calculations of the process characteristics for various RDF compositions are presented. The advantage of the plasma method in comparison with autothermal one is shown. Experimental data are shown.

  Nanostructured thin films is one of the highly exploiting research areas particularly in applications such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis and sensor technologies. Highly tuned thin films, in terms of thickness, crystallinity, porosity and optical properties, can be fabricated on different substrates using the sol-gel method, chemical solution deposition (CSD), electrochemical etching, along with other conventional methods such as chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and physical vapour deposition (PVD). The above mentioned properties of these films are usually characterised using surface analysis techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, AFM, ellipsometry, electrochemistry, SAXS, reflectance spectroscopy, STM, XPS, SIMS, ESCA, X-ray topography and DOSY-NMR. This article presents a short review of the preparation and characterisation of thin films of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide and modified silicon as well as their application in solar cells, water treatment, water splitting, self cleaning fabrics, sensors, optoelectronic devices and lab on chip systems.
