Show affiliationsAnodic oxidation allows the preparation of aluminum oxide (AAO) templates with self-organized, ordered pores and diameters ranging from 10 nm to 200 nm. Electrochemical deposition of metals, semiconductors and oxides has been demonstrated. As a case study, we investigated the growth of Fe/Ni nanowires in the AAO templates. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy are used to optimize growth parameters and to demonstrate that length scales and periodicities of the templates can be transferred to the wire arrays. This paves the way for the preparation and investigation of tailored matter on nanoscales with emerging applications in photonics, sensorics and information technology.
