Show affiliationsHydroxyl titanium oxalate (HTO) powders were synthesized by a chemical precipitation method in alcoholic solution and the microstructure, dielectric properties and electrorheological (ER) performance were investigated. The yield stress of HTO-based ER fluid (with a volume fraction 40%) reaches 81.6 kPa under 5 kV mm−1 external electric field, and the shear stress is beyond 40 kPa in shear rate of 1–100 s−1. The high performance suggests that the HTO-based ER fluid is a potential candidate for ER applications.
