Show affiliationsThe average natural width of line for the calculation of the width of maxima consisting of overlapping many-electron lines can be effectively used. This is demonstrated by the calculation results for the L1–L2,3, L1–M4,5 and L2,3–M4,5 transitions in lanthanides. It is shown that the evaluation of the natural width of the inner-vacancy level introduces inaccuracy which can exceed 1 eV when using the data of the widths of x-ray spectral maxima for atoms with an open shell. This is caused because of the part of the width of maxima which is dependent on the multiplet structure that cannot be separated into the contributions from the initial and the final vacancies.
