Show affiliationsThis paper reports on variational calculations of eigenstates of the hydrogen atom in an external homogeneous magnetic field (the Zeeman effect). We use a set of basis functions that have the proper analytic form to describe the wavefunctions of the Zeeman Hamiltonian both in the Coulomb (B → 0) and in the Landau (Z → 0) limits. Using this set of basis functions, we determine the eigenvalues of the Zeeman Hamiltonian with accuracy up to 30 significant digits.
