Show affiliationsThe recent version of the shift contribution to the hydrogen lines proposed by Oks (2002 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 35 2251) is shown to overestimate any dipole ionic–electronic shift effect. Moreover, it is not needed for the interpretation of experiments with the best diagnostics, and is inconsistent with recent full numerical simulations.
