Show affiliationsA measurement of the 3p absolute photoionization cross section of Ca+ ions is reported. The experiments were performed by means of the merged-beam technique and utilizing a target ion beam containing both 3p64s ground-state ions and 3p63d metastable ions. By combining measurements performed with different fractions of metastable ions, it was possible to obtain separate cross-section data for the two species, and we present here for the first time the photoionization spectrum of the metastable 3p63d state of the Ca+ ion. Comparison with theoretical predictions allows an interpretation of the strongest features in terms of 3p → 3d transitions.
