Measurements of the dynamic Youngs modulus were performed in polycrystalline YBCO by the vibrating reed technique (102-104 Hz) at different temperatures between 300 and 850 K. An abrupt and strong modulus softening, indicative of a phase transition, occurs with increasing x at about 0.50. Isothermal modulus measurements suggest that the orthogonal phase first transforms into a tetragonal matrix with embedded micro-ortho domains. Successively, first order kinetics yields the tetragonal phase.
