  Gamma-ray data from ^74,76Ge+ ¹⁸O fusion-evaporation reactions are analysed to provide data on yrast decay schemes in ^87,89Zr, ^87,88,89,90Y and ⁸⁶Sr. The data include excitation functions, angular distributions, gamma - gamma coincidences, linear polarisation measurements and lifetimes deduced from both Doppler shift attenuation and recoil distance measurements. Shell-model calculations are presented for ^88,90Y and ⁸⁶Sr.

  Elastic photon scattering experiments are discussed which have been used to investigate the average distribution of E1 and M1 strengths below particle threshold at energy regions of high nuclear level density. An experiment with quasimonochromatic tagged photons has confirmed the smooth energy dependence of the average radiative strength in ²³⁸U below threshold. The inferred total photoabsorption cross sections are in agreement with the extrapolated tail of the giant dipole resonance. At energies below 5.3 MeV, however, local concentrations of E1 strength have been observed which probably can be attributed to strong isolated resonances seen in previous NRF experiments using neutron capture gamma rays. Large amounts of strongly fragmented M1 strength have been found in ⁹⁰Zr, ¹⁴⁰Ce and ²⁰⁶Pb using linearly polarized tagged photons. The total M1 transition strength is in agreement with recent microscopic calculations and can account for the giant M1 resonance in these nuclei.

  Absolute cross sections for the ¹⁷O(d,p) ¹⁸O reaction and ratios of cross sections to the ¹⁶O(t,p) ¹⁸O reaction serve to identify a state at 9.0 MeV in ¹⁸O as having J ^pi =4 ⁺ and consisting predominantly of the configuration (1d _5/2)(1d _3/2). Earlier results for the ¹⁶O(t,p) ¹⁸O reaction are consistent with this conclusion.
