Dilute intermetallic compounds. II. Properties of aluminium rich aluminium-transition metal phases

For pt.I, see abstr. A64477 of 1973. The well ordered intermetallic compounds Al3Sc, Al3Ti, Al3V, Al7V, Al10V, Al7Cr, Al6Mn, Al9Co2, and Al3Ni have been studied. Their low temperature specific heats, and their magnetic and transport properties have been measured. The specific heats and resistivities suggest a virtual bound state (VBS) model for the d electrons with the VBS having a width of about 2 eV, which is somewhat greater than in the corresponding Al based solutions. Any tendency to magnetism is much weaker than in the solid solutions. These results, taken together with other evidence, show the importance of bonding and charge transfer in these compounds. The Al-V compounds are anomalous in every respect, which may be because bonding effects are of particular importance in them.
