LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The steady-state shock formation in processes such as nonconserving asymmetric simple exclusion processes in varied situations is shown to have a precursor of a critical deconfinement transition on the low-density side. The diverging length scales and the quantitative description of the transition are obtained from a few general properties of the dynamics without relying on specific details.
