Show affiliationsThe author investigates the propagation of an initial profile consisting of a planar KP soliton with some small modulations. Using the solution of the Cauchy problem for the linearized KP equation, find that for large times the modulations move away from the peak of the profile, leaving behind a stable soliton. A generalization of this method is formulated for the study of the stability of solutions of other integrable equations.
