Show affiliationsPhotoelectron studies of laser-excited atomic states can reveal more information about the final ionic states than ground-state photoemission. The possibility to tune the laser to distinct fine-structure sub-states of the excited states allows to select specific angular-momentum couplings of the valence electron that are conserved during photoemission. In the 4s photoemission of laser-excited rubidium we use this method to determine the final-state energies and widths of doubly excited ionic states and characterize the angular-momentum couplings.
