Show affiliationsA purely geometric mass-generating mechanism is developed, whereby gauge bosons masses are shown to arise naturally when the lambda gauge invariance (a properly defined kind of projective symmetry) is spontaneously broken in higher dimensions. In the explicit calculation made for the SU(2)*U(1) case, the bosonic mass spectrum of the standard GWS model is precisely reproduced in a 4+4 dimensional setting, devoid of the usual Higgs sector.
