Show affiliationsWe present both the theory and an experimental method to accurately set up a Guoy phase telescope, where both the output spot size and orthogonality condition are invariant to distance from the cavity beam waist. We demonstrate that Gaussian spot size measurements can be used as a diagnostic to determine the desired locations of split area photodetectors. The Guoy phase invariance is verified using the tilt-locking technique.
