Itinerant band weak ferromagnetism from the Stoner equations

J A Blanco and J Pisonero

Show affiliations

On the basis of the Stoner equations at finite temperature, using the Sommerfeld expansion, calculations on the temperature and magnetic field dependences for the magnetization in weak ferromagnetic metals are presented. This procedure, which was first introduced by Wohlfarth in the 1960s, enables a great variety of magnetic behaviour observed in three-dimensional metallic systems to be understood. Our particular choice of sequence follows certain major strands of an introductory course in solid state physics from their first elementary exposition to their more advanced aspects, with a minimum of digression.
