Newton and hidden symmetry

Peter Pesic

Show affiliations

Newton recognized a general connection between inverse-square and oscillator forces. This relation reflects the closure of the orbits and is now known as hidden symmetry. When the symmetry is broken Newton deduced the rate of perihelion advance, the time rate of change of the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector. Newton used this symmetry to present spatial and temporal magnitudes overlaid in a unified geometrical treatment.
