On Fermi's route to Fermi-Dirac statistics

Contrary to current opinion, Fermi did not introduce his quantum statistics in order to explain metal conductivity. His aim was to obtain a correct derivation of Sackur and Tetrode's formula for the entropy of a perfect monatomic gas.
