A method based on energy balance is applied to derive the threshold fields for the excitation of purely growing surface instabilities in semi-infinite warm magnetoactive plasmas. It is shown that the threshold fields are determined by the same formulae as for the excitation of purely growing parametric volume instabilities in infinite plasma, but the influence of geometry is taken into account by the characteristic frequency of the system.
