  The interaction of two Maxwellian distributions of particles will differ from the interaction of the two particles at their respective Maxwell averages if the strength of the interaction varies significantly with energy over the widths of the distributions. This effect is considered here in particular for fusion (both D-T and D-D) for the mean energy of the reacting particles as a function of temperature and for the spectrum of the neutrons produced.

  A brief review of the techniques used to oxidise silicon in oxygen discharges is given and a series of experiments that have been carried out to identify the oxidizing species are described. There is strong evidence to suggest that the negative ion O ^- is responsible for the observed phenomenon.

  In preceding work on plasma gyro-kinetics magnetic coordinates were introduced prior to making the transformation to the guiding centre variables. It is the transformation from the particle variables to the guiding centre variables which permits finite gyroradius effects to be retained in lowest order. The present treatment avoids the substantial mathematical complications inherent in these prior treatments by introducing the transformation to the guiding centre variables and performing the guiding centre gyrophase average before specifying the magnetic coordinates to be employed. In this way the unperturbed, gyro-averaged Vlasov operator which retains finite gyro-effects is obtained in the most convenient manner for arbitrary unperturbed magnetic fields.

  An analysis is given of the mechanism whereby strong variable electric fields occur in an ion beam in which the space charge is compensated by the electrons which the beam produces in a rarefied gas. An experimental study has been made of the nature of the plasma instabilities responsible for the dynamic decompensation of the beam and effective means of controlling these instabilities have been found. The results are more or less applicable to all physical systems in which intense ion beams in a strong magnetic field are used, for example electromagnetic isotope-separators and plasma traps with external injection of fast ions.

  Just as ordinary gas dynamic shocks in a gas of zero viscosity, but finite thermal conductivity do not possess a continuous structure above a certain critical Mach number, MHD shocks in a two-fluid plasma also exhibit discontinuities when viscosity is neglected. These discontinuities occur when the Alfven-Mach number of the shock, M _A, exceeds a certain critical value M _A*; the precise value of M _A* depends on which of the three dissipative mechanisms of thermal conductivity for ions and electrons and electrical resistivity are retained and is independent of their actual values. In the practically important case of strong narrow shocks in which ion collisions can be neglected, but the electron gas still exhibits fluid behaviour, one finds that M _A*=3.46. This is the case tau _i/ tau _s approximately infinity and tau _e/ tau _s<1, where tau _i, tau _e are collision times in the ion and electron gases respectively and tau _s is the characteristic shock time (shock thickness divided by shock speed). The ion viscosity tends to zero in both of the limits tau _i/ tau _s to 0, infinity and while the resulting discontinuity at M _A>M _A* is known to be stable for the first of these limits, in the second limit ion-ion streaming instabilities are likely to occur. The addition of collisionless electron viscosity due to finite Larmor radius results no change in the value of M _A*.
