Show affiliationsDescribes a new variant of the wire mesh method of measuring optical fibre microbending sensitivity which was introduced by Garg and Eoll (1986). The new arrangement constrains the fibre in the form of a single-turn loop, which is pressed against the wire mesh. With single-mode fibre, this results in a smooth increase of attenuation with optical wavelength, reminiscent of that seen when fibre is subjected to microbending in cable. An advantage is that it is easier to compare fibre samples for microbending sensitivity at a given optical wavelength.
