Show affiliationsUnusual magnetic properties in CeSb and CeBi are interpreted in terms of the mixing mechanism between the 4f state and the valence bands. To explain the magnetic properties quantitatively the effective 4f level should be considered, which is a virtual concept introduced to interpret the higher-order effects of the p-f mixing. The calculated effective 4f level becomes shallower than the level observed by the XPS measurements.
