Differential cross sections for the excitation from the ground state to the 21S and 23S states of helium and to the (2s) state of atomic hydrogen by electrons are calculated for incident energies of 50 to 200 eV. A wavefunction calculated by Winters (see abstr. A47875 of 1974), is employed to describe the incident channel, making allowance for absorption, polarization and exchange effects. Final state scattering is taken into account through a distorted wave formalism. The results provide a generally satisfactory representation of experiment, although it is considered that improvements could be obtained by including the coupling between the final states and the neighbouring 2P states.
