Abstract

When radiative decay competes with autoionisation, below an excitation threshold, the resonance contribution to excitation in highly-charged ions can be considerably reduced. Just above threshold, radiative decay of the ion may also occur before excitation, and the excitation cross section is reduced. The importance of this effect is studied in the case of resonance transitions in helium-like ions.
